URBN Shanghai to cut water usage by 70%
URBN Hotel Shanghai has announced the launch of a new water recycling and purification system, which will bring clean, potable tap water to its three food and beverage outlets, helping to reduce URBN’s overall water usage by 70%. The hotel, which claims to be the world’s first carbon neutral hotel, said that the project is a result of the company’s increasing concern over China’s water crisis.
China is home to 20% of the world’s population, but only 7% of its water supply. URBN cited a report by research firm McKinsey & Company, as saying that China will face a water shortage of 201 billion cubic metres in 2030, when 300 million people will lack safe drinking water.
According to URBN, its drinking water will be purer and better-tasting than any other restaurant or bar in Shanghai. It also means that the food will be washed and cooked in pure water and free of heavy metals and bacteria.
URBN’s Managing Director, Scott Barrack, said; “We will offer all our guests the most sustainable restaurant in Shanghai with the freshest drinking water. Try finding that anywhere else in China!”
This new water recycling system has already been successfully deployed in the first URBN Green Hotel in Shanghai and will be installed in other URBN establishments in 2011.
