US Airways’ shareholders have overwhelmingly approved the company’s planned merger with AMR Corp, the parent company of American Airlines.
In a vote, 99.6% of the Arizona-based airline’s shareholders were in favour of the merger, paving the way for the two airlines to join forces, creating one of the world’s biggest airline groups.
“This approval is a major milestone on our path to completing the merger,” said Doug Parker, Chairman & CEO of US Airways.
“By bringing together two highly complementary networks and generating significant revenue synergies, the new American Airlines will deliver enhanced value for its shareholders. I want to thank our shareholders, our customers and our more than 100,000 dedicated employees for their support throughout this process and look forward to moving forward as an even stronger airline.”
US Airways and American have already agreed to join forces to create the new American Airlines-branded carrier, offering 6,700 daily flights to 336 destinations in 56 countries with a combined fleet of 950 aircraft.
