US Governors to promote tourism in Beijing

Hawaii will be pushing tourism during the three-day US-China Governors Forum in Beijing, in a bid to attract more Chinese tourists to the island. Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) President Mike McCartney and other tourism officials will join State Governor Neil Abercrombie in the Chinese capital. The pacific island is already proving popular wih Chinese travellers. The state tourism agency expects a 37% jump in Chinese arrivals this year and a further 20% growth over the next two years.
McCartney will join Abercrombie for a meeting with Shao Qiwei, Director of China’s National Tourism Administration at the forum. The two will also meet with officials from China Eastern Airlines and the US embassy as well as representatives from the airline and travel industries during their visit.
According to the China Daily, Guam Governor Eddie Baza Calvo is also interested in promoting the US territory as a travel destination to the Chinese people. Calvo has fielded the idea of visa waivers for Chinese nationals at previous meetings with Chinese officials.
