Virgin Blue Airlines has announced that the planned 15 December launch of its new trans-Pacific carrier, V Australia, will be delayed. The company has blamed on-going strikes at Boeing’s Seattle factory for the postponement. V Australia currently has three Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in production at the facility, however work on the planes has ceased since 6 September when 27,000 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers downed tools.
With no firm delivery schedule in place, Virgin Blue said it had no option other than to postpone the V Australia launch date until 28 February 2009.
V Australia’s Sydney-LAX services will therefore be delayed, although its Brisbane-LAX services, due to launch on 1 March will not be affected. Customers booked to travel in the Christmas/New Year period from 15 December to 16 January will be offered alternative arrangements.
