The service begins late next year and will compete with Qantas and United on the lucrative route.
With approvals, Virgin will fly 10 times weekly, reports from Australia said.
“This is the first time in decades Australia has a start-up long haul international airline and we look forward to bringing competitive air fares and a new style of service to the trans-Pacific market,” Virgin Blue chief executive Brett Godfrey was quoted saying.
He said V Australia would be profitable within two years, Virgin has spent about A$2.2 billion (US$1.95 billion) to purchase six Boeing 777-300ER for V Australia, with the lease of a seventh taking the total cost of the fleet to A$2.6 billion.
Godfrey said with ten flights a week, V Australia would take about 12 per cent market share of the Australia to US west coast market.
