Vietnam’s tourism arrivals increased significantly in the first half of 2016.
According to the latest data from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), the country welcomed 4.71 million international visitors in the first six months of this year, up 21.3% compared to the same period in 2015. This figure was helped by a strong performance in June 2016, when the country saw a near-30% jump in arrivals, to 700,446.
Mainland China contributed 1.20m arrivals to Vietnam in the first half, up 47.9% year-on-year. This made it Vietnam’s largest source market. South Korea (+34.0% to 741,069) was second, and combined, these two countries accounted for 41.3% of total international arrivals to Vietnam.
Japan (+12.7% to 355,886), the US (+14.5% to 292,960) and Taiwan (+15.8% to 242,371) completed the top five source markets, while a strong rebound in arrivals from Russia (+21.1% to 204,364) also helped drive Vietnam’s tourism recovery.
Last year, Vietnam welcomed a total of 7.94m international visitors. But if the current rate of growth continues in the second half, Vietnam will end 2016 with more than 9.5m visitors. It should be noted however, that Vietnamese tourism suffered a weak first half in 2015, with visitor arrivals falling 11.3% year-on-year.
