Vietnam failed to meet its international arrivals target of 4.5 million last year but intends to raise its targets this year.
According to the country’s Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Tran Chien Thang, Vietnam wants to see 6 million international tourists and 23.5 million domestic tourists this year, Vietnam News said.
To enable these targets to be met, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) plans to stimulate travel through a plan that includes a 30-50% cut in flights and accommodation rates through September and special tourist events to be held throughout the country.
These were disclosed at the recently-ended ASEAN Tourism Forum held in Hanoi.
The Minister was also quoted saying that the regional tourism industry should focus on low-budget package tours such as the “Three Countries One Destination” programme. This is targeted at travellers interested in visiting the Indochinese countries of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
Among the events planned for this year are the “Visit the Central Highlands Year”, the report said.
