Vietnam’s resurgent tourism industry remains well on track to achieve a record year, in terms of international arrivals.
According to the latest data from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), the country welcomed a total of 6.45 million overseas visitors in the first eight months of 2016, up 25.4% compared to the same period last year.
This means that Vietnam is almost certain to exceed its previous full-year record of 7.94m international visitors, set last year.
Mainland China and South Korea are the main driving forces behind Vietnam’s tourism boom. These two countries contributed more than 40% of all arrivals to the Southeast Asian nation in the year-to-August 2016. Visitation from mainland China surged 57.9% to 1.75m, while South Korean arrivals jumped 37.6% to 1.01m. Japan accounted for a further 482,358 visitors, up 12.1% year-on-year.
The USA (+14.8% to 341,250) was Vietnam’s largest non-Asian source market, while Russia (+25.0% to 265,554) rebounded strongly to reclaim its place as the country’s biggest source of European visitors.
Air arrivals to Vietnam – the strongest indicator of international tourist numbers – jumped 28.8% to 5.44m in the first eight months of 2016, accounting for 82% of the total inbound traffic.
