Vietnam’s second private airline may soon be taking to the skies. According to VietNamNet Bridge, the Ministry of Transport was expected to license Air Speed Up soon, making it possible the airline to start domestic flights later this year.
Vo Huy Cuong, Director of Civil Administration of Vietnam’s Air Transport Department, told the daily that a licensed airline would have a maximum of two years to gain required certificates and prepare for commercial flights.
The report said Vietnamese songwriter Ha Huy Dung was behind the venture. Air Speed Up has chartered capital of VND200billion (over US$12.3million) and foreign investors could own up to 49% of capital in a Vietnamese air transport company. Ha Dung was reported saying that the first commercial flight between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City could take off in the fourth quarter of this year.
Air Speed Up will be the fifth airline and the second private carrier in Vietnam if it is licensed. The first private carrier, Vietjet Aviation Joint Stock Co. (VietJetAir), was expected to take off late this year, the report said.
Last week, Vietnam’s Pacific Airlines completed its transformation to become Jetstar Pacific, the country’s first low-cost airline.
