Athens-based Viking Hellas has changed its name to Fly Hellas to avoid confusion with defunct Viking AB. The airline has also announced that it will close its base in Gatwick to focus on the stronger Russian and EU markets. The rebranding will be in effect from 1 May. Scheduled flights will continue to operate under alternative carriers for the current winter programme and summer 2011. Meanwhile, Viking Hellas Airlines has launched indirect flights from Manchester to Iraq via Athens. A twice weekly service will operate between Manchester and Athens, with connections available to the Iraqi cities of Erbil and Sulaimayniah. “We have been successfully operating these scheduled services routes from Manchester since summer 2010 and have built a strong following amongst passengers wishing to travel by the most direct route from Manchester to these two developing cities in Iraq,” said Roger Gatt, managing director of Viking Hellas Airlines. “In addition many other passengers are using our competitively priced services from Manchester to Athens for both short breaks and their annual holidays. The A30 is an ideal aircraft for these routes and we are pleased to be able to announce that our services are available to travel agents through the Amadeus GDS and the BSP payment system.” Viking Hellas already operates flights to three Iraqi cities from Amsterdam, Athens, Frankfurt and Stockholm.
