Virgin Blue Group has thrown its weight behind a push to find a global solution to aviation emissions by joining the Aviation Global Deal (AGD) Group.
Virgin joins Air France-KLM, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Qatar Airways, Virgin Atlantic, airport operator BAA and non-government organisation The Climate Group, in a push for a global emissions trading mechanism.
Virgin Blue chief executive Brett Godfrey believes the AGD Group is an important addition to moves by the International Air Transport Association and the International Civil Aviation Organisation to encourage a coherent global response to aviation environmental issues.
“We’ve been for a little while now concerned about … creeping regulations throughout the world in each separate jurisdiction,” he said.
Mr Godfrey said Virgin Blue wanted to see a co-ordinated effort and to be able to participate in the legislative framework of climate control as opposed to having it imposed.
