Visiting the seven Wonders of the World would once have been considered something only the wealthy elite could aspire to. However, a new report has found that seeing all seven wonders in one year is possible for under £5,200.
Money saving website Voucherbox.co.uk undertook the price study and found that for a total cost of £5194 it is possible to travel from the UK to visit the seven Wonders – The Great Wall of China, Petra (Jordan), The Colosseum (Rome, Italy), Chichén Itzá (Yucatán, Mexico), Machu Picchu (Cuzco Region, Peru), Taj Mahal (Uttar Pradesh, India) and Christ the Redeemer (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – in less than a year.
The list of the Wonders of the World comes from an initiative started in 2000 to choose the New Seven Wonders of the World, with winners announced in 2007.
The total cost includes economy class return flights from London, travel connections to reach the local destination, accommodation and food in the destination country and any entrance fee to visit each of the seven wonders. Those traveling would need to carefully plan their journey to avoid peak season travel as the cheapest time to visit each wonder varies, as the cost comparison table shows:
Wonder | Cheapest travel month | Flight | Transport to Wonder | Entrance Fee | Accommodation | Food | Total |
The Colosseum, Italy | April | £47 | £8 | £9 | £174 | £71 | £309 |
Taj Mahal, India | November | £311 | £20 | £8 | £79 | £21 | £439 |
Petra, Jordan | May | £232 | £20 | £50 | £247 | £34 | £582 |
Great Wall of China | June | £352 | £75 | £5 | £300 | £46 | £777 |
Chichén Itzá, Mexico | April | £486 | £21 | £8 | £425 | £30 | £970 |
Christ the Redeemer, Brazil | April | £574 | £23 | £10 | £315 | £51 | £973 |
Machu Picchu, Peru | May | £540 | £100 | £27 | £445 | £30

The cheapest of the world’s seven wonders to visit for those starting their journey in the UK is Rome’s remarkable Colosseum, built by the Romans at the height of their powers, but now possible to see as part of a £309 round trip to the Italian capital on a budget.
Meanwhile the most expensive wonder to visit for Brits is Peru’s Machu Picchu. The 15th century Incan citadel set in the Andes Mountains, high above the Urubamba River valley, is the most expensive of the wonders to take in at £1,142, mainly due to the cost of flights to Cuzco and the relatively expensive local accommodation charges.
Even throwing in a visit to the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt – which has honorary status as an additional wonder in the contemporary shortlist of the New Seven Wonders of the World – could be achieved for a further spend of £390 according to Voucherbox’s researchers.
The travel costs have been calculated on the basis of visiting each destination on individual trips to and from London, rather than as part of a round the world trip. Travellers inspired to get their backpack ready will need to get a move on as the cheapest months to visit many of the wonders are April, May and June, with the only exception being India’s beautiful Taj Mahal which works out cheapest to visit in November.
Shane Forster, UK Country Manager of Voucherbox.co.uk, commented: “Just 20 years ago the costs of a trip like this would have been well beyond the means of most of us, but now for less than the cost of a new car an intrepid Brit could see the Seven Wonders of the World.”
“Whilst many things in modern life seem to be getting increasingly costly, it is truly remarkable how much of the world you can see on a budget nowadays if you plan carefully. To visit the Wonders of the world for less than five grand would be an achievement but we think it really is possible with some flexibility on travel dates and some smart co-ordination.”
