Walk Japan has announced the launch of the Tohoku Hot Spring Snow Tour in February 2018. This tour perfectly showcases the region, famed for its rugged landscapes and onsen springs.
The Tohoku Hot Spring Snow Tour is fully-guided, and leads groups of up to 12 through rural Tohoku, characterised by towering mountains, remote valleys, rugged coasts and vast forests, the snowy winter season.
Tohoku’s cold winters pair well with the warming onsen hot springs. Matsuo Basho, one of Japan’s greatest literary figures, was known to relax in the very same hot spring baths in the 17th century and guests follow in the footsteps of the poet to a spectacular temple high above a valley on a steep cliff.
Throughout the tour, participants stay at local inns with onsen hot spring baths and meals cooked with a wide range of fresh produce sourced straight from the seas, rivers, mountains and fields of Tohoku. The Level 3 tour is suitable for fit people who can walk comfortably for three hours a day.
The Tohoku Hot Springs Snow Tour is an eight-night fully-guided snowshoe tour for up to twelve participants, and the first tour will run from 24 February – 4 March 2018.
Prices for the nine-day tour start at JPY480,000 per person (approximately £3,394) and include accommodation for eight nights, eight breakfasts, six lunches and eight evening meals, plus train transfers departing from Tokyo, snowshoe rental, baggage transfers and fees.
