West Bengal launches major tourism project

The state government in West Bengal, has released details of a new mega tourism project worth about INR400 crore.
“While tourist circuit projects in Kolkata and Dooars would cost INR50 crore each, the projects in Darjeeling and Murshidabad districts will cost about INR25 crore each.”
The State’s Tourism Minister Manab Mukherjee told PTI. The project in Dooars will include development of eco-tourism and religious sites to encourage spiritual tourism.
On the hospitality front, three properties owned and managed by West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation (WBTDC) – Morgan House, Tashiding and Hilltop in Kalimpong – will be turned into boutique hotels.
In Darjeeling would be taken up with the restoration of some old-hand institutions like the Planters’ Club, Saint Andrew’s Church and the Gymkhana Club, besides creating modern tourism information centre at the hill town with cyber cafe at Chowrasta.
Murshidabad district will emerge as a major heritage destination in the state with the development of riverfront at Berhampore, Lalbagh, Azeemgunj, Kathgola palace, heritage mosques, temples and palaces, besides a light and sound programme at Hazarduari and a tourism hub at Motijheel.
In Kolkata the government plans to promote cultural and develop the Ganga River Front. Meanwhile, cultural tourism will be promoted with the development of new tourism packages.
