Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province has embarked on a journey that could see it attract one million tourists a year. Indonesia’s President, Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono, was in Senggigi, West Lombok, to launch the ‘Visit Lombok Sumbawa 2012’ programme, and pledged to provide support in turning West Nusa Tenggara into a leading tourist destination in the country.
“Improvement in the tourism sector could spur economic growth in general. One potential area for growth, that must be promoted domestically and overseas, is Lombok and Sumbawa,” Yudhoyono was reported saying in his keynote speech to launch the programme.
Meanwhile West Nusa Tenggara’s Governor, Zainul Majdi, said that ‘Visit Lombok Sumawa 2012’ was part a wider tourist development programme in the province. “We hope that West Nusa Tenggara will be able to attract one million visitors annually, which could happen if all those involved in the sector, province wide, get involved in pushing forward these plans,” he was reported saying.
West Nusa Tenggara consists of Lombok and Sumbawa islands, as well as 331 smaller islands called gilis.
