Sapa, the scenic town in northern Vietnam, could soon be more accessible following the construction of a new airport.
Thanh Nien News reports that a proposal to construct an airport on 261 hectares of land close to Sapa has been backed by “several government ministries”, and work could commence as early as the third quarter of 2016.
The VND5.8 trillion (US$257 million) project would include a passenger terminal and a runway able to handle jet aircraft like the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737. It will be able to handle 560,000 passengers in its first stage, before being expanded to more than 1.6m passengers by 2030.
The development of an airport would be likely to provide a tourism boom for Sapa. At present, most visitors travel overland to the mountainous town from Hanoi. The train journey takes approximately eight hours.
