World’s largest airline formed

United Continental Holdings Inc was formally created on Friday 1 October, creating the world’s largest passenger airline, in terms of passenger numbers. The new carrier – merger of UAL Corporation’s wholly-owned subsidiary, United Air Lines Inc, and Continental Airlines Inc - began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ‘UAL’. The new airline will operate approximately 5,800 flights a day to 371 airports throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia from their hubs in Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Guam, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Tokyo and Washington, DC. Carrying an estimated 144 million passenger per year to 59 countries, and with a total fleet size exceeding 650 aircraft, the merged entity is larger than Delta Air Lines.
