The world’s longest sea bridge – the Qingdao Bay Bridge in eastern China’s Shandong province – is expected to open to traffic next month. The bridge’s structure is complete and the roadway section is due for completion in 10 days time, the China Daily reported engineers on the project as saying yesterday. The 41.6km-long bridge links two districts of the port with of Qingdao, cutting the journey time between the two locations to around 20 minutes. The project has cost an estimated CNY9 billion (US$1.4 billion).
The Qingdao Bay Bridge takes the title of ‘world’s longest sea bridge’ from another Chinese structure, the 36km-long Hangzhou Bay Cross-Sea Bridge. Authorities in Malaysia however, last year announced plans for a 52km bridge across the Malacca Strait, linking the Malay Peninsula with the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
