Icelandic carrier WOW Air has said it hopes to transform transatlantic travel with the launch of £99 one-way fares to the US.
The low prices were announced today for flights from London Gatwick to Boston and Washington DC via Reykjavik. Both options in either direction have short connection times in Iceland’s Keflavik International Airport.
The Boston route commences on 27 March 2015 followed by Baltimore Washington International from 4 June.
It will be looking to compete for US traffic with Norwegian, which recently launched direct routes to New York, Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles from Gatwick. Ryanair has also hinted at launching transatlantic services.
WOW’s CEO Skúli Mogensen is confident the move will make an impact on the market.
“This is just the beginning of our plans to transform low-cost transatlantic flights. Not only are we providing flights to the USA for less than a standard London to Edinburgh train ticket, we’re opening the market to a whole new market of travellers who might previously not have been able to afford transatlantic travel,” said Mogensen. “The low-cost airline market is scrambling to offer cheap flights to North America and I’m happy that we‘ll be amongst the first to do so and at a price point that will no doubt cause our rivals to re-evaluate their plans.”
