WOW Air has become the first Icelandic carrier in 30 years to receive the Air Operator’s Certificate.
WOW Air completed its first flight in May 2012 and took over Iceland Express at the end of 2012, with the certificate now allowing full responsibility and control away from other airline operators.
The certificate will help the airline to continue the growth it has already seen in the last 18 months, which saw 90,000 passengers carried in 2012 and 450,000 expected in 2013. This is set to grow to 720,000 in 2014, helped along by five new Airbus A320s that will be delivered.
“The AOC is a turning point in the history of aviation in Iceland. I am proud of this accomplishment which will prove to be a corner stone in the ongoing growth of the company,” said Skúli Mogensen, founder and CEO of WOW Air.
Hermann Guðjónsson, the general director of The Icelandic Transport Authority, said: “The Transport Authority would like to express its joy over awarding a new Icelandic airline the license to operate as such. We wish them good fortune and we hope for good cooperation in the future.”
