The tourism industry in China’s restive western region of Xinjiang has been hard hit again by the recent reports of syringe attacks in its capital, Urumqi, Xinhua reported a local official as saying. Xinjiang was recovering from the July riots, with the local tourism bureau reporting hotel occupancy of 85% before the recent attacks. Occupancy has now plummeted to around 25%, following the cancellation of 76 tourist groups, the bureau was reported saying. To revive the tourism industry after the riots, the regional government had allocated CNY5 million (US$730,000) to subsidise travel agencies whose business were affected.
