Business travel has shown good recovery in this year’s first quarter, results from the Guild of Travel Management Companies (GTMC) transaction survey has revealed. Rail travel has seen continued improvement with a 13% rise in transactions. Figures in air travel increased by 9%, hotel bookings were up by 5% and car hire rose by 1%. These are encouraging compared to the same quarter in 2009 when air travel transactions slumped by 14%, hotels by 8% and car hire by 26%. “The GTMC quarterly transaction survey has always been a telling gauge of how UK Plc is performing and in normal circumstances the latest figures would be cause for cautious optimism,” said GMTC Chief Executive Anne Godfrey. “The volcanic ash crisis will undoubtedly negatively affect the second quarter’s air statistics. It will be interesting to see how rail and car rental fared; bearing in mind the pivotal role they played in the rescue of many stranded business travellers.” The quarterly survey monitors the organisation’s members’ transactions from agents and operators such as ATP, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Egencia, HRG and Ian Allan Travel.
