Jat protestors finally lifted their blockade of railways in the northern India on Saturday, much to the relief of stranded passengers. Though services are now running as normal, authorities have warned that it will take a few days for travel conditions to return to normal given the long backlog of journeys caused by the disruption. Jats decided to block main railway lines in the region last week to protests their group’s socio-economic marginalisation in Indian society.
Demanding their inclusion in the list of Other Backward Classes to secure quotas in government jobs, the Jats had been blockading key rail routes in western Uttar Pradesh since 5 March, reports IANS. The protest was called off Saturday after the Allahabad High Court ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to restore rail services. Their activities caused mass delays and cancellations on the busy Delhi-Lucknow route throughout the week, forcing most trains to take long detours.
