Tourism Ministers from across Northern India will meet for a regional conference in Rishikesh on 2 May. Various points will be up for discussion when delegates get together. One issue that must be addressed is the tax payment levied on tourists when traveling tourist circuits between different states in the region. TOI reports indicate a disparity in the taxes imposed on tourist coaches in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, which impede inter-state travel. This has turned into a hurdle for tourists making a quick trip to nearby destinations like Kurukshetra, Shimla and Chhatbir, keeping their base at Chandigarh. “The issue of common corridors for joint promotion of tourism by adjoining states has been discussed by the tourism advisory council of Chandigarh several times but this will be the first time the issue will be formally taken up with tourism departments of Punjab and Haryana,” the General Manager of Tourism A K Malhotra told TOI . The Union Territory (UT) will also put up a proposal for projecting itself as a garden-tourism destination in the region and linkages with Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh will also be forged on this front. Recently, UT has begun work on two gardens, Garden of Conifers in Sector 52 and Garden of Palms in Sector 42, are coming up. A finance aid of INR23 crore has been granted to create tourism infrastructure at prominent tourist spots.
