China Airlines (CAL) has announced that it will launch direct flights to Hawaii next week.

Commencing on 2 June 2013, the new route will see CAL become the first Taiwanese airline to offer direct flights to Honolulu. Services will operate twice a week using an Airbus A330-300 aircraft, departing Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport on Wednesdays and Sundays, returning from Honolulu the following day.

The launch of the direct flights, which will operate in addition to CAL’s existing Taipei-Tokyo-Honolulu service, follows the inclusion of Taiwan in the US visa waiver programme, which is expected to boost Taiwanese visitor traffic to Hawaii. Hawaiian Airlines is also launching flights between Honolulu and Taipei this summer.

The Hawaii launch is just one of several new international services CAL is adding this summer. Earlier this month the airline doubled the frequency of its Taipei-Fukuoka route from one to two daily flights, while its Kuala Lumpur service has been increased to from seven to 10 flights per week.
