Crystal Cruises has announced one of its itineraries will navigate the Northwest Passage in 2016.
The cruise line will be the first in the luxury category to take on the 900-mile route, which was once so remote it took centuries until it was first completed by Roald Amundsen more than 100 years ago.
Sailing in August 2016, the cruise will start in Anchorage, Alaska on Crystal Serenity and sail for 32 days from the Pacific to the Atlantic, ending in New York.
The itinerary has taken two years to create, with the help of Expedition Voyage Consulting by EYOS Expeditions, although will be flexible depending on wildlife and weather.
New ‘Wilderness Adventures’ excursions will be launched covering visits to fjords, coves, remote communities, Arctic safaris, fishing, climbing and more.
“From reviewing operations with Canadian officials to meeting with Inuit elders of the Arctic who have provided their backing, our team has spent almost two years diligently gathering the field experts, information, resources, and support to ensure an epic experience that is exceptionally rewarding and safe for guests and crew, and respectful of local lands and cultures,” said Thomas Mazloum, EVP at Crystal.
“During this voyage, speakers will enlighten guests on information regarding climate change, and how it has impacted this passage. With the recent retreat of polar ice, the time is right for us to lead the way within the travel industry, as Crystal has done throughout our 25-year history,” he added.
