Singaporean carriers must adhere to new rules on crew management as authorities look to prevent fatigue among pilots and cabin crew.
Among the changes by Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) is the decision that pilots handle no more than two nights per week. CAAS also requires airlines to monitor crew performance and submit reports to ensure staff are performing to standard.
This revision follows a global report by the United Nations’ International Civil Aviation Organisation and the International Air Transport Association which concluded that crew management was based on arbitrary limits that are not founded on research and science, which prompted a revision of rest periods.
Singapore Airlines (SIA) and other local carriers were consulted earlier in the year, prior to the regulatory changes.
Speaking to the Straits Times, SIA spokesman Nicholas Lonides said the airline supports the changes, calling them a step forward in ongoing initiatives to enhance operations and ensure an “appropriate level of alertness for crew”. He added that rosters have already been adjusted to reflect the changes.
