A group of cyclists has completed a nine-day, 960km ride from Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok.
The journey, which crossed Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, is being supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and is expected to boost the popularity of cycling tours in Thailand and the Mekong region.
The tour was the brainchild of Vietnamese cyclist Vo Huu Thien, CEO of Vietnamese real estate company Saigon Vina. All the participants are members of the Land Saigon Bike Club, which was founded by Thein in 2003.
Organised by Viking Travel & Media, the journey started in HCMC and travelled through Neak Luong, Phnom Penh, Pursat and Sisophon in Cambodia, before continuing on through the Thai provinces of Sa Kaeo, Nakhon Nayok and ending in Bangkok.
“I have been dreaming of this trip for the last five years. I believe it will go a long way towards promoting ASEAN friendship and integration and intra-regional travel. All the group members undertook nearly a year of training on domestic land routes in Vietnam before deciding to head for Thailand as our first destination,” said Thein.
The TAT supported the cyclists by arranging for faster immigration procedures at the Thai border and organising a gala dinner after their arrival in Bangkok.
“TAT is very happy and honoured to support this inaugural trip. Biking holidays are one of our fastest growing niche markets and expected to become even more popular after the Asian Highway network is completed,” said the TAT’s deputy governor for international marketing, Pongsathorn Kessasamli. “We hope to see more cyclists in Thailand after this successful trip.”
