The fourth International Tourism Mart (ITM) for India’s northeast region will be held in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, from 14-16 October 2015.
The move was confirmed this week by Dr Mahesh Sharma, India’s Minister of Tourism, Culture & Civil Aviation, who also revealed that the event is expected to attract international buyers and media delegates from 27 countries.
Addressing the media, Dr Sharma said that the ITM will “showcase the rich tourism potential of the northeast states”, which are being prioritised in terms of development by Narendra Modi’s government.
The Prime Minister recently sanctioned a funding package of INR12 billion (US$181 million) for the development of Guwahati Airport in Assam state, as well as INR4.8bn for the upgrade of Agartala Airport in Tripura, and INR900m for work at Tezu Airport in Arunachal Pradesh. The government is also aiming to promote a series tourism circuits in the northeast region.
Last year’s ITM in Shillong, Meghalaya, was attended by delegates from countries including Japan, Korea, Australia, France, Spain, Russia, Germany, the UK and USA.
