India is expecting to welcome around 900,000 visitors from Southeast Asia this year, up by 15% compared to the 754,000 achieved last year.
The Economic Times reported RK Suman, assistant director at the India Tourism office in Singapore, as saying that the introduction of the e-tourist visa system for all ASEAN countries would drive the expected double-digit growth.
“We are expecting 15% increase in Southeast Asian tourists visiting India this year, especially boosted by the introduction of e-visa and our promotional campaign across the region,” Suman was quoted saying.
Southeast Asian tourist flows have been increasing steadily in recent years, rising from 540,910 in 2012, to 628,955 in 2013 and 685,805 in 2014.
Suman helped promote Indian tourism across seven countries in the ASEAN region last year, and he plans to expand the promotional activities to Cambodia, Laos and Brunei this year, completing the region’s 10 member states.
“We have a wide range of promotional programmes in the ASEAN region, through media and television network, as well as public buses which are especially painted with Indian tourist attractions,” he added.
The promotional programme also includes seminars, forums, and networking sessions, plus India’s participation in travel, tour and hospitality exhibitions held across the region’s major cities.
