Tamil Nadu is the most popular Indian state for international travellers, new data has revealed.
The Indian Ministry of Tourism revealed that cumulative foreign visitor arrivals to the country’s states and union territories reached 23.33 million in 2015, 4.5% more than the previous year and 16.9% higher than in 2013.
Tamil Nadu was named as the most-visited state by international travellers, followed by Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR and West Bengal.
Several states and territories experienced declining tourist arrivals last year however, compared to 2012. These included the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Bihar, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand. No comparable figures were available for Andhra Pradesh and Telengana due to the division of the states.
Nationwide Ministry of Tourism figures for 2015 show that India welcomed a total of 8.02 million international visitors last year, up 4.4%.
