Malaysia will scrap a power station in an environmentally-sensitive area in eastern Sabah.
“After weighing the pros and cons, the cabinet decided to do away with the proposal because we do not want to risk the welfare of the communities in the area including their health and any adverse impact on the environment,” the state Chief Minister Musa Aman was quoted saying by The Star.
The report said the government has directed state power company Tenaga Nasional Berhad to look for alternate sources of energy for the state.
Local environmentalists said the coal plant would damage the environment, including the pristine Danum Valley jungle. The government’s decision to cancel the power plant is based on the proximity of the proposed site close to vital eco-tourism sites.
“We cannot allow for such a plant to be built because these conservation areas have been designated as eco-tourism sites under the Sabah Development Corridor,” he was quoted saying.
