Plan to promote Thailand’s northeast
The Tourism Authority of Thailand is focusing more on the northeastern part of the country, preparing to dedicate 2008-2010 to promote that area.
Bangkok Post said the TAT was introducing new tourism routes along the Mekong River, dinosaur fossils and cultural tourism in the Northeast as well as Khmer and ancient civilisations of the region as part of the promotion plan.
The report, quoting a TAT study, said average spending by visitors to northeastern provinces was just over Bt1,500. In contrast, the national average was Bt5,000 per trip.
Tourist arrivals to northeastern provinces was 16.8 million last year compared with 12.7 million in 2001.
Sirirat Denvorapongsasuk, managing director of the Ubon Buri Hotel & Resort, was quoted saying that tourists mostly opted to use the northeastern provinces as the gateway to visit Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.
She added said the government should support the development of the meetings industry in that part of the country.
Suthat Praesurin, vice-chairman of the Tourism Association of Udon Thai province, was also quoted suggesting that more low-cost airlines should be persuaded to stop there.
