Indonesia’s government has revealed that the construction of Yogyakarta’s new airport will get underway in May.
The Antara news agency reported the country’s vice president, M. Jusuf Kalla, as confirming the timeframe for the project on Saturday.
“God willing it will be built starting May. Hopefully, land clearance and design will be completed in May so it can be completed in 2019 or 2020,” Kalla was quoted saying. He added that state airport operator Angkasa Pura I is “also ready” to start work on the development.
Yogyakarta’s new airport will be located in the Kulon Progo regency, which lies to the southwest of the city. The phased development will eventually see the airport handle up to 30 million passengers per year. It will be connected to Yogyakarta by rail and road links.
The existing Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta currently handles more than five million passengers per year.
