Bad weather in Nepal has left more than 140 tourists stranded at Tenzing-Hillary airport, Lukla, the only airport for Everest region, for more than six days.
Travellers from Britain, China, New Zealand and other countries are stuck in Lukla with no sign of the weather rescinding.
One Chinese passenger, Liu Jianxin, told Xinhua newspaper; “The weather conditions are very bad. We have been stranded here for the past six days and still there is no confirmation as to when we can get the flight back to Kathmandu.”
The tourists’ fete now lies in the hands of the weather as no rescue is yet on the agenda. Nepal Army Spokesperson General Ramindra Chhetri said that unless a formal rescue request is made, the authorities will not act to extract the tourists.
Lukla is a notoriously dangerous airport given the harsh surrounding landscape, thin air, highly changeable weather and its short, sloping runway. Fourteen people were killed in an air crash there back in August.
