Five passengers got the lavish ride of a lifetime as the only passengers on an American Airlines transatlantic flight. Furious environmental groups have criticised the carrier for leaving a wasteful carbon footprint. According to a CNN report, the flight used about 68,000 litres or 13,000 liters of jet fuel per passenger for the nine-hour trip from Chicago to London.
It said each passenger left a footprint of 35.77 tonnes of carbon dioxide, enough to drive an average car 160,000 kilometres.
“Flying virtually empty planes is an obscene waste of fuel,” Friends of the Earth’s transport campaigner Richard Dyer was quoted saying.
The AA flight was delayed 14 hours and while most passengers had made other arrangements to London, the five were unable.
AA defended the flight, saying they had a full load of passengers waiting at London’s Heathrow airport to return to the United States.
