55 million take to China’s roads

An estimated 55.5 million people took to China’s roads on Wednesday - the second day of the ‘Golden Week” national holiday period. Xinhua has reported Ministry of Transport spokesperson, He Jianzhong, saying that that the number of travellers has risen 7.4% from the same period in 2007.
A total of 760,000 passenger vehicles were reported to have ferried travellers across the country, He said, adding that most tourists travelled only short distances from their hometowns.
The holiday period this year runs from 29 September until 5 October.
