In the run up to the General Election, the Liberal Democrats have announced plans to clamp down on “unscrupulous and unreasonable airline fees”. In recent months low cost carriers have been heavily criticised for their charges. However, Bob Atkinson, travel expert at travelsupermarket.com said that the Lib Dems’ ‘anti-Ryanair’ manifesto doesn’t explain how they plan to regulate and potentially legislate on airline fees and charges. “The UK flights market is the most competitive in the world and the OFT has already completed extensive work with airlines to ensure the booking process is clean and transparent for what the Lib Dems’ are calling “unreasonable fees”. Who will determine what is unreasonable and who will pay for this quango?” He added: “Most of the fees Ryanair and other low cast carriers charge are optional and none are hidden. In the past I’ve been critical of low cost airlines, however we must remember they have actually driven down the cost of flights over the last ten years making travel more accessible for millions of people. Over the last six to 12 months the low cost airlines have improved the transparency of their websites in order to make the booking process and all charges clearer. Customers need to look at the total price of a flight for the items that are relevant to them before making a booking and compare prices across a number of airlines.”
