ABTA Chairman John McEwan has outlined his General Election hopes in terms of what would be in the best interests of the travel industry,”Most people will want to see decisive action as the recurring deficit has not been pleasant. We don’t want to see businesses unduly penalised and think the government should be helping growth in business so they can employ people and build their own service,” he told TDUK.”The impending rise in Air Passenger Duty (APD) also needs to be addressed; it should be capped at a certain level and another scheme should be implemented to make sure tourism [growth] can continue.” ABTA Chief Executive Mark Tanzer has said the manifestos of the three main parties represent a “mixed bag” for the UK travel industry.”On the positive side, [there is] commitment from two to reform APD and invest in the railways, but on the negative, only one is backing the expansion of our airport infrastructure, which is essential to the health of UK PLC,” he said.”We have a very strong case to make that travel truly matters. Commitments in manifestos are very much works in progress and we are doing everything we can to influence key decision makers in Westminster and Brussels.”He urged ABTA members to raise industry issues with their local parliamentary candidates.
