The Adventure Tour Operators Association of India(ATOAI) has suggested that the North East should not be sold as a cheap destination and should focus on low volume/ high value clients.
It was claimed at the tenth annual ATOAI convention in Guwahati, that mass tourism should not to be encouraged as it can be detrimental to the environment and local culture.
Another recommendation was to market the region as one cohesive product, bringing the best of all states and creating experiential products like river cruises, golf, nature, safaris or war memorials.
There were also calls for more airports and increased trekking and mountaineering expeditions deeper into the Himalayas.
The association also suggested that wildlife tourism should not be tiger-centric, but a greater emphasis on quality interpretations of forest bio-diversity should be given.
