Switzerland-based carrier Darwin Airline has opened its base in Cambridge today announcing four international routes from the airport.
The airline, which has a head office in Lugano, Switzerland and another base at Geneva, is to link the UK city’s airport to Amsterdam, Paris, Milan and Geneva.
New services will operate under a codeshare agreement with Alitalia as fellow SkyTeam members from 2 September.
The airline will operate a total of 50 flights to and from Cambridge a week including 12 weekly round-trip services to Amsterdam; six weekly operations to Paris CDG; three times a week to Geneva and fly four times a week to Milan Malpensa.
The flight launch comes as many regional UK airports see development, particularly for feeder services into Europe where they can then catch a flight to destinations in the US, Africa, Asia or beyond.
“The opening of this new and exciting base by Darwin Airline is a strategic step in our development of Cambridge as a regional international airport. This puts our city firmly on the international transport map, making it easier for people from around the world to get here,” said Steve Jones, managing director of Aviation Services on behalf of its owners Marshall.
The location is also expected to be an inbound success due to the business in the area and its location close to the city centre. The airport has also recently refurbished its terminal to include a new business lounge, Costa Coffee, free WiFi and a lounge-style feel.
“As we expand within Europe, the UK is a key market for us to further establish and we are delighted to open our new base in the heart of East England. Cambridge is at the forefront of several business sectors and spearheading the UK’s economic growth – it is thriving and vibrant, one of the UK’s most valuable and affluent markets,” said Maurizio Merlo, CEO at Darwin Airline.
