A new flight schedule at Delhi Airport is causing significant delays to flights. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) was forced to curtail flights in and out of Delhi airport after residents took legal action, complaining of the noise caused by landing aircraft. As a result, the airport has enforced a curfew which alternates arrivals between two different runways. According to TOI, a night curfew was imposed on the new runway under which no flights could land on it between 11pm and 6am. However, to ensure that all Delhites benefit from the curfew, AAI distributed the schedule over two runways so that each area would get respite for eight hours in the day and then four hours at night. However, this has significantly increased taxi times for LCCs using the new runway to 25 minutes in good conditions and as much as 40 minutes in fog. This has resulted in a 15-20% slump in on-time performance, as once behind schedule it is very hard for management to make up time. Though residents may be satisfied, a long term solution is required because it is imperative for the nation’s aviation industry to run on time.
