A large number of people in Chennai are producing fake documents to apply for passports through the tatkal scheme which was only to benefit those who required travelling abroad at short notice. From modifying their birth certificates and producing a false bank document to producing fake address proofs and letters of emergency, they do it all, Times of India said. Officials at the regional passport office was quoted saying that some applicants doctored the documents to claim immediacy of travel. “We advance the dates of about 50 people everyday when there are genuine reasons for emergency such as foreign studies, job offers from abroad and medical reasons, if they produce proper certificates supporting their claim,” deputy passport officer S Ramanathan was reported saying. “Two or three foul cases do come in, but as soon as we find out such cases, we reject their application of advancement and allow them to wait for their turn.”Unlike in the case of visa applications where those producing fake papers are handed over to the police by the consulates, the passport office doesn’t report such cases to the police. Many do this because they have to produce three different proofs of address to apply for the passport under the tatkal scheme, the report said. “I have been residing in my current house only for three months. To prove that I’ve been here for over a year, I applied for a change of address in my bank account and requested for a bank statement with my new address on it. ,” a woman was quoted saying.
