Korean Air has announced that it will no longer carry shark fins on its cargo flights.
Previously, the Seoul-based airline carried shark fins only on the condition that a valid CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) permit was obtained by the customer prior to shipment.
But in response to what it called “a series of global movements calling to ban the carriage of shark fins”, including the recent CITES conference in Thailand which added another five shark species to the endangered list, Korean Air has now decided to completely end the carriage of shark fins.
Korean Air joins Cathay Pacific in banning the carriage of shark fins, as the travel industry continues to work towards improving the plight of sharks. Hotel chains such as Shangri-La and Swissotel have already banned shark fin dishes from their menus.
According to research, more than 73 million of sharks are ‘finned’ around the world every year.
