Joint efforts by Visa International and Seven Bank Ltd. have installed more than
12,000 Seven Bank ATMs that will allow international Visa cardholders to take out cash withdrawals in yen starting yesterday, 11 July 2007 and can get receipts printed in English, Portuguese, Chinese, and Korean.
The ATMs are strategically installed in global convenience store brands, Seven-Eleven and Ito-Yokado as they are familiar to travellers making yen withdrawals easier and attract more confidence.
If you have an overseas-issued credit card you normally can not withdraw cash from ATMs as they are based on Japan-specific standards making it annoying for common visitors both in business and leisure to draw cash conveniently.
Luckily this has prompted calls by the tourism industry for domestic ATMs to be reconfigured based on international standards so that cards issued by foreign financial institutions can be used more easily in Japan.
