Heathrow Airport has come out fighting in its efforts to counter Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s claims that a third runway is “political Kryptonite”, with a poll that a majority of MPs are in favour of the move.
Despite Johnson claiming there was no way the runway would proceed with “immovable” opposition in Parliament, an Ipsos Mori poll (commissioned by Heathrow) of 143 MPs, including 58 Conservatives and 66 Labour MPs, showd that 88% of the MPs questioned believe a hub airport, such as Heathrow, is “critical” to Britain’s future economic success.
When asked which option they thought would best solve the issue of hub airport capacity in the UK, 58% answered a third runway at Heathrow while 13% backed a second air strip at Gatwick.
Less than 10% preferred a Thames Estuary airport, which was rejected by the commission despite being championed by Johnson.
Heathrow CEO, John Holland-Kaye, said that increasing numbers are backing the airport as “the best solution for the UK hub capacity crisis”.
“The countries Britain needs to trade with are changing fast and only a hub airport can provide direct access to these markets,” he continued.
“There is growing momentum and support for a third runway at Heathrow. This week alone, Britain’s biggest business organisation – the CBI – has come out in support of a hub airport; the Airports Commission has said that it recognises the need for a hub airport but has ruled out a new airport in the Thames Estuary; and now this poll shows MPs back a third runway at Heathrow as the best solution for the UK.”
