With this, the only procedure left is obtaining the AOC from the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority, which Azran expects by mid this month, and that would pave the way for its inaugural flight to Gold Coast on 2 November.
The Star newspaper said skeptics had expressed doubt over AirAsia X getting this certification due to various reasons.
“We had someone from our team fly to Australia last night to hand over the AOC from DCA (Malaysia’s Department of Civil Aviation) to the Australian authorities,” chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani told the newspaper.
Meanwhile, the newspaper said AirAsia chief Tony Fernandes is on his way to Seattle to “explore the capabilities of Boeing’s B787-1000” aircraft for AirAsia X’s long-haul flight to Europe and beyond.
Azran is also leaving for Manchester for talks with the Manchester airport authorities and other bodies on possible flights into that airport starting as early as 2008, the report said.
“Our first flight to Europe will depend on how fast and how accommodating the local airport authorities and local government are in receiving us; it can be London or Manchester,” he said.
On the Gold Cost flight, Azran said that of the more than 6,000 bookings, 4,000 were direct bookings by passengers via the Internet and 2,100 by travel agents on behalf of their customers.
