According to Lanka Business Online, the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau has already conducted two campaigns in the tech cities of Bangalore and Hyderabad.
“We wanted to focus on the corporates who like to have their meetings in Sri Lanka,” Prema Cooray, chairman Sri Lanka Convention Bureau was quoted saying.
Officials are planning to hit Mumbai and Delhi next.
Out of Sri Lanka’s half a million tourist arrivals each year, about 15% were in the MICE sector.
India with an outbound MICE market of one million a year is the island’s biggest customer, with 15,000 to 20,000 MICE arrivals each year, Cooray was quoted saying.
Officials hope the new promotion will boost MICE visits from India to 90,000 from the annual 20,000, during the next three years.
“Once awareness is built right around India, we will surge ahead. It can help [us] compete with other destinations,” Cooray was quoted saying.
Sri Lanka also competes with similar destinations such as Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Mauritius which are established players.
