India is planning to connect all of the state capitals in the northeast of the country by rail.
The Economic Times reported the country’s Minister of State for Railways, Manoj Sinha, as making the declaration, although no time frame for the project was given.
Northeast India comprises seven separate states: Arunchal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Progress has been made in linking the region by rail in recent years; in April 2014 a new railway link was completed connecting Itanagar, the capital of Arunchal Pradesh, with Assam. But there are still no rail links to Imphal, Aizawl, Kohima, the respective capitals of Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland.
In a separate development, Lucknow Junction, the main railway station in the capital of Uttar Pradesh, now offers free Wi-Fi. The Economic Times reports that the service launched on Saturday and each passenger will be offered an initial 30 minutes of free connectivity.
