Japan’s ANA has launched a new direct service to Sydney.
The airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, painted in a Star Wars-themed livery, touched down in the Australian city on 13 December, marking the start of a new daily service from Tokyo.
Mike Baird, Premier of New South Wales, was at Sydney Airport to welcome the inaugural flight.
“I’m pleased to welcome the arrival of ANA’s first daily direct service between Tokyo and Sydney, which will encourage more people to explore NSW and Japan, and increase trade and business opportunities for companies in both countries,” said Baird.
“My first overseas mission after being re-elected in March 2015 was to Tokyo, Japan where I met with government and business leaders, including ANA President and CEO Mr Osamu Shinobe. My visit focused on reviving the NSW-Tokyo Sister State relationship and the resumption of ANA’s Tokyo-Sydney return service will support the further development of cultural, business and bilateral ties between NSW and Japan.”
More than 134,000 Japanese travellers visited New South Wales in the year ending September 2015, spending more than AU$278 million (US$200m) in the state.
ANA’s flights will now depart Tokyo Haneda Airport daily at 2210, arriving in Sydney at 0935. The return flight then departs at 2130 and arrives back in Tokyo at 0515.
